Dog Howl-oween Costumes

Every year, 1.6 million dogs are adopted from shelters in the United States, but 670,000 still get euthanized, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Now is a great time to do something to help. October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and to celebrate, we’re getting into the Halloween spirit. Whether you go for frightening or funny, you and your furball can look spook-tacular this Halloween.
Dog Howl-oween Costumes

Check out some of the best dog costume ideas for your four-legged friend:

Unicorn Dog: You know your furry rascal is as special to you as a magical unicorn. Now’s your chance to show the world with this unicorn dog Halloween costume. It takes a few simple sewing skills, but the finished result is spectacular.

Harry Poocher: Get some round fake rims and a mini Hogwarts scarf, and you’ll get the basics of this wizarding look. You can easily make his signature specs out of black pipe cleaners. Bonus points if you can fashion that puppy-sized uniform blazer.

Daenerys and Dragon: You too can be a mother (or father) of dragons with a doggy dragon getup. This easy dog costume tutorial is really for bat wings, but you can absolutely make them dragons, of course.

Downward Dog: Turn your mutt into a real yoga master with a few well-placed accessories.

Martini Head: Here’s how a cone of shame becomes Halloween dog costume fame. Adorn a dowel with some green foam circles, stick some red felt on each, and they look like olives in a martini glass. Cheers.

Rocket Dog: There’s not much that a few well-placed strips of duct tape can’t do. Spray paint some liter bottles, then tape them together and add some red, orange and yellow tissue paper for a custom-made doggie jetpack. Note, these could work as scuba tanks, too.

Moana: Instagram sensation Doug the Pug inspires us all with his Moana impression. Somebody, please try this dog costume this Halloween and take a share a picture of your whole ensemble with us.

Whatever dog Halloween costume you try, we’d love to see pictures of you guys in action. And, if you’re inspired to adopt a new best friend, visit your local shelter this month and get it done. We love our furry Neighbors, too.
