Best Dog Breeds for Apartment Living
Just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dream of having a pet. We all know the joy that owning a dog can bring – they are called “man’s best friend” for a reason, right?
But before you rush out to adopt your new pet, take some time to think about what type of breed is the best for apartment living. Some breeds simply don’t do well in that sort of lifestyle, while others thrive. It’s all about finding the best dog breed for apartment living AND your personal lifestyle!
In general, some characteristics or qualities in ideal dog breeds for apartments include:
- Quiet
- Low energy
- Fairly calm indoors
- Polite with other animals and humans
Ideal dog breeds for apartments can vary from small to large.
An English Bulldog is one of the ideal dog breeds for apartments because they are very low energy. Call these medium-sized dogs the couch potatoes of the dog world – there is nothing they love more than lounging around the house, napping. They’re known for being patient and great with children, loyal, loveable and very quiet.
If the space in your apartment means a smaller-sized dog would be a better choice, think about a French Bulldog. This breed is a combination of a Boston Terrier and a French Bulldog. They typically have the qualities that make an English Bulldog a great choice for apartments (quiet, patient, loyal, happy to be lazy), but they have the small size of a Boston Terrier.
Looking to go even smaller? Small breeds of dogs that commonly do well in apartments include:
- Shih Tzus
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Havanese (This breed can be more playful than others, but they are relatively quiet)
- Maltese
- Pug
Large breeds great for apartment living
Don’t love smaller breeds? Some large dogs can also be perfect dogs for apartments. Great Danes – yes, we said Great Dane – can be a great choice as long as you have the space. They’re quite large, however, they are gentle giants: calm, quiet easily trainable and content to be a couch potato all day.
Greyhounds are another large breed that can do well in apartment living. It’s a surprising choice, given their history as a racing dog, but they tend to be calm and relaxed and are a very low maintenance breed.
Other large breeds that are great pets for apartment living include:
- Bullmastif
- Manchester Terrier
- Basenji
- Alaskan Klee Kai
- Golden Retriever
